A FUNERAL service was expected to take place for Councillor Peter Wood at St Mary the Virgin Church yesterday (Weds).
As the Herald went to press, mourners were due to gather at the town centre church to pay their respects to the former leader of Ashford Borough Council, who died on March 1 after a short illness.
Weeks before his death, Cllr Wood had written a letter to council colleagues to announce his decision to step back from duties while he recovered from an operation.
He had intended to return at the end of March and Cllr Gerry Clarkson was appointed acting leader in his place.
Council colleagues paid tribute to Cllr Wood in last week's Ashford Herald as a "man of great integrity" and a "real gentleman".
The council's flag at the Civic Centre in Tannery Lane was flown at half-mast until yesterday.
Cllr Clarkson will continue to lead the cabinet until a new council leader is elected, but it is expected that he will be voted into the position at the next full council meeting, on Thursday, April 21.
